Cost of Discipleship - January 17, 2018

Luke 9:23

And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Today's Thought: Following Jesus Christ is not easy, but a constant reminder of our death and Christ living in us.

The greatest denier of himself is the apostle Paul. He constantly reminded himself of dying daily for Christ to be seen in his life. He was a lawyer by profession, and he denied it - even considered all he learned as dung for him to know Christ. It was a life wholly dedicated to his Master - a life of Christ's.

Let us be reminded today that following Christ is about Christ and not us. There will be struggles along the way. It will be a constant fight against our flesh, against the devil. We should reflect the life of Christ, and it is only possible if we deny ourselves for Christ to take the pre-eminence in our lives.

Following Christ is not easy for true discipleship demands our nothingness and Christ's everything. Charles Spurgeon said, "Nothing teaches us about the preciousness of the Creator as much as when we learn the emptiness of everything else."
