Leviticus 18:9-10
Today's Thought: Only those who value work can accomplish something for the glory of the Lord.
The father of Semon Knudsen was the president of General Motors. When he was old enough to drive, Semon asked for a car. He got one - but in various pieces. Because he would have it for free, he had to work on putting this own car together. This way, he would have to work for something he wanted to enjoy.
The tendency is to avoid work at all. But if this is the case, ruin and danger are sure to the end. Work teaches us character and discipline we need for the spiritual journey we will have. A young child who does not value work will not be a seeker of God's Word later in his life. When God asked the people to leave something for the poor, He did not command them to just give them those resources. But God wanted the poor to come and gather it than just ask it from those who tilled the ground without any effort.
The church at Thessalonica was reminded by the Lord that "if any would not work, neither should he eat." This is a hard injunction of Paul, but the apostle was making a clear message: work. We must not be afraid of work, but be thankful because we are active in doing so.
And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God.
